Remember the 80’s when we’d slather on Hawaiian Tropic, lie on a sheet of aluminum and bake until bronzed?  Of course, that was before we knew about the hole in the ozone layer and melanomas.   We all feel a little better with some color, but fake n bake is not okay-the Mayo Clinic says so!

New Jersey MAMA, Patricia Krentcil, has earned the title “Tan Mom,” because she’s clearly a tan-addict ...

Book MAMA's review of: Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs

I’m lying by the pool with my older sister.  It’s spring break.  The kids are swimming.  The sun is warm, and it feels good on my skin.  I’m soaking it up—soaking up all that vitamin D mixed with UV radiation.  I know it’s not good for me.  I know it causes skin cancer.  But it feels really excellent—like a lot of things that aren’t ...

"Better to be safe, than sorry."

Ouch!  Sunburns are NO FUN.  For whatever reason, when we were growing up we slathered on baby oil and surrounded ourselves with metallic anything (silver rafts, tin foil tanning concoctions)...whatever it took to get that summer glow.  Now, we are slathering SPF 70 on our kids before they leave the house!  (Oh, that silly ozone layer.)

The bad news is that sunscreen does lose it's effectiveness, so you have to chuck last year's supply.  The good news is if you buy sunscreen in bulk, you can save some money.  So stock up!

Sunburns can lead to all sorts of health issues, so protect your KID-Os every day!  Even though it's not quite summer yet, those rays are coming through, so get them in the habit and lube them up in the mornings.

What do you think is the best sunscreen for your kids? What SPF?

"Never talk to strangers."

So, as summer approaches and the weather is perfect for parks and playing outside, make sure to talk to your kids about "stranger danger," as well as reminding them that they should NEVER go with anyone, even people they know, unless mommy knows what they are doing and who they are doing it with.  Try role playing with your kids and asking "what if"...what if a nice lady with a cute puppy stopped in front of the house and asked you to come into the car and pet the puppy...what if a really cool looking kid asks you to go with you in the mall to play a video game?!

Make up some doozies and give them the tools to make safe choices!!!

What are some important things you teach your kids about safety?

"Make your world a happy place."

It's amazing what a flower can do...it can make you smile, it makes your house pretty, it provides food for the bees to buzz about and spread more beauty around.  Plant a flower and watch it grow with your kids...or plant a bunch and watch the happiness bloom.

Have you gardened with your KID-Os?

"You are what you eat!"

Yes, our grandmas were right!!!  Our kiddies need to eat a good breakfast...and balanced, home cooked meals. We are the ones who are responsible for their eating habits.  We are the ones who make the choices in the market and at the kitchen table.  If we want healthier kids, we need to give them healthier food!

Do you have any fun, healthy snack ideas?

“Make your own fun.”

Don't break the piggy bank open this summer...fun is around every corner...even in your own backyard or local park.  Plan a "stay-cation"...stick around, save some cash, unplug from the computer, tv and cell phone, plan a themed day or weekend...do it up and have some good old fashioned fun with the family!  The KID-Os will love it!!!

Check out our top 10 favorite "stay-cation" ideas...what are yours?

"With age comes wisdom."

Some of the most special relationships our kids will ever have is with their grandparents, or they should.  They have different life experiences and perspectives that enrich our children's own sense of themselves.  Whether they are talking about their time in the service during WWII or how they make gravy, all of those stories impact them.  They will be part of their memories.  Our job is to put it in context and tell our kids why our parents should be respected and appreciated for all those stories...even if we used to roll our eyes when they told them to us!

I voted for Barack Obama. I believe one person can make a difference. I love living at the beach, skiing and finding treasures at the swap meet. I grew up in Rochester Hills, MI. I was raised by a single Dad. I graduated from the University of Michigan and moved to California to go to grad school (never went, long story). I married a California “surfer boy.” We traveled around the world for a year. I was a Vice President of an advertising agency and I ended my career when I had my first baby. I have three kids who go to private school. I am happily married to a guy who helps me do the dishes.
And, that’s just the beginning…my opinions on political/ social issues might surprise you. It also might surprise you to know that Debbie and I are good friends…and I respect her opinions. She is a mother, too, so we learn from each other.
I am a wife, mother, volunteer, creative thinker and aspiring environmentalist. I have a lot to say. I am an O-MAMA.

I am going through a divorce.
